Welcome to Frenchtown High School-and the people whose lives were brought together in one way or another by their connection to the building. Built to replace the old public school, which though only twenty-three years old, was woefully inadequate, it burned down in 1923. In 1931 Mr. Cane became the second supervising principal. We meet him on page one, along with Sam and his wife, Laura. Before the second page is finished Sam's youngest brother dies and Mr. Cane is there. Later, he encourages Sam to go to college. Their ways part. Mr. Cane takes the position at Frenchtown High. Sam goes to college, experiences the ups and downs of young relationships and ends up back in his hometown, a partner in a Sporting Goods Store. How their lives come together over a hundred miles away in that little high school along the Delaware will introduce you to a number of interesting characters as you discover how their lives all came together in Frenchtown, all because of that building on Harrison Street. You will meet the teachers and from their first introductions you will find them to have lives of their own and aren't just robots standing at the front of the room. You will learn about families surviving the great depression and then coping with World War II, only to have to adjust to a whole new way of life when victory finally comes. And you will learn that victory and winning are not necessarily synonymous. This tale will definitely make you remember things, things that you never dreamed you would experience when you were one and twenty. And if you have ever been there in the communities of the valley, you will be left wondering, "Where have all the cows gone?"
